Pastoral Prayers For All Seasons
Object:
O God, was it cool the night Jesus was born? Did someone attend Mary other than Joseph? Or was he the midwife as well as the husband? Did Mary cry out? Did Joseph panic because he didn't know what to do? Were there women who came running to the stall, because they heard that a girl was giving birth to her firstborn? Did they wipe the perspiration from her forehead? Did their words, "Everything is coming along just fine," reassure her? Did they bathe the baby Jesus and give him to Mary in swaddling clothes? Did they know he was the King?
Did Mary remember what the Holy Spirit had told her only months before? Could she affirm to herself that she was holding the Savior of all the world in her teenage arms?
Did she worry that the straw might get into his blankets? Did she fret because she wasn't sure when to nurse him? Was she concerned that the stable was such a crude shelter for God's Son? Or did she cast her worries aside, and for this hallowed moment, cradle her son, running her fingers across the soft curve of his cheek, and exult in the joy of giving birth?
Help us, Giver of Life, to remember that night, that young father, that young mother, and that defenseless, innocent child who was destined to be our King. Amen.
