Christlike Humility/Obedient Unto Death
Preaching
Life Everlasting
The Essential Book of Funeral Resources
Object:
Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death -- even death on a cross!
"He made himself nothing for us ... and became obedient unto death." This passage could be used to celebrate the lives of those who gave their lives for others; soldiers, police officers, fire fighters, heroes, or even just those who made great sacrifices for others, one who was a wonderful and sacrificial parent or spouse. In preaching from this text, one could first celebrate the humility of the deceased, and then push on to the humility of Christ that led to the great victory of the cross and the empty tomb.
