CLAUDIA: (ENTERS IN A STATE OF AGITATION. SHE COUGHS PERIODICALLY) I am swamped!
PAUL: (OFFSTAGE) What?
CLAUDIA: It's like I'm drowning.
PAUL: I put him outside.
CLAUDIA: I can't stand it. (CRYING) Paul, I'm really hurting here.
PAUL: What? I can't hear you.
CLAUDIA: I lost my mother's death certificate. I don't know where it is.
PAUL: I can't hear you. I'll be there in a minute.
CLAUDIA: Lord, I can't stand it. I just can't stand it. What's happening? Why am I having all this trouble? Why aren't you listening to me? Lord, don't you care that I'm drowning? I'm drowning here.
PAUL: (ENTERS. FINISHING GETTING DRESSED FOR WORK) I put the cat outside. Hey, which tie goes with this shirt?
CLAUDIA: I really can't stand it. I really need help. I'm drowning here.
PAUL: (HUGS HER) Claudia, what is it?
CLAUDIA: It's just everything. Just everything. It's like nothing is going right for me. Doesn't God care about us? I'm sick. I've been sick now for two weeks. The doctor doesn't seem to know what's wrong with me. It's like no one cares. I can't get well. And now I can't find my mother's death certificate. I had two extra death certificates made for the court and I sent one with that insurance claim and I put the other one right here on the bed and now I can't find it. The washing machine is leaking water. We can't afford to buy a washing machine. What is this? What's happening? Oh, Paul, where is God when things get tough? When you really need Him where is He? Doesn't He care about our little problems?
PAUL: Did you pray about it?
CLAUDIA: No.
PAUL: I love you, Claudia. (PRAYING) Jesus, right now just comfort Claudia. Hold her in your arms just like I'm holding her now. You are loved, Claudia. I love you. Jesus hasn't forgotten us. He knows exactly where that lost death certificate is. It's not lost to him. He cares. He'll see us through this. He will. You'll see.
CLAUDIA: I don't know. I called the lady at the insurance office. Wouldn't you know it, she wasn't there.
PAUL: Probably on break.
CLAUDIA: I need some answers.
PAUL: I know. Jesus will give us answers. He cares. You'll see. Just relax and hang in there. You'll get well. The doctor said you would.
CLAUDIA: I know what he said. It's just that it's taking so long. I can't sleep at night. I cough all night. I'm so tired.
PAUL: Did you eat breakfast?
CLAUDIA: No, no, I didn't. I was making that call and then she wasn't there and then I couldn't find my mom's death certificate and I'm so tired and the washing machine and ...
PAUL: I'll tell you what. We're going to pray. How does that sound?
CLAUDIA: Yeah.
PAUL: Dear Jesus, we know down deep in our hearts that you care for us. We know how much you care for us. Would you please show Claudia where that death certificate is and, Lord, you created the metal that went into making that washing machine, and you created the people who created that machine, so could you get it fixed, please? Or if it's real easy, show me how to fix it. Oh, Lord, could you please heal Claudia? I love her so much. I hate to see her sick. She's so miserable and can't sleep. Give her a day of rest, please, Lord. And when she wakes up have her feeling a little better, please. Thanks a lot, Jesus. We love you. We're just in deep water right now. We need you to rescue us. Amen.
CLAUDIA: Thanks, Hon. I love you. You helped. I was really low. You really helped.
PAUL: Well, I'll get you some breakfast if you'll pick a tie for me to wear. (EXITS) And then you're going to take a nap. (PHONE RINGS)
CLAUDIA: (ANSWERING IT) Yes? Oh, good. Good. All right. I was wondering where it was. Thanks. Thanks a lot. Bye. (HANGS UP) Thank you, Jesus.
PAUL: What? (ENTERS)
CLAUDIA: That was the insurance company. I mailed them both death certificates. They're going to mail me the extra one.
PAUL: (THEY HUG) You see. Jesus takes care of us. What about my tie?
CLAUDIA: Did you pray about it? (THEY EXIT)
