In Washington State, the old timers remember the Starbuck
ferry which transported cars across the Snake River. What caused
me to marvel about this primitive craft was that it went from
dock to dock, carrying up to six autos, and it had no engine. It
was connected to a cable and the pilot propelled it from one side
to the other by using the push of the current against the
restraint of the cable, somewhat the way a sailboat tacks into
the wind. Logs and debris float helplessly in the stream's
