Series II, Cycle C Gospel Texts
Bright Monday, also called Easter Monday, acknowledges the fact that God has the last laugh over sin and death and the grave! Easter/Bright Monday parties resurrect an old and unfortunately often forgotten tradition that goes back to the early centuries of Christianity. According to an article in The Joyful Noiseletter, publication of The Fellowship of Merry Christians (F.M.C.), "The early fathers and mothers of the church encouraged God's people to celebrate continually. Many of the great religious figures of all denominations have passed down through the centuries the same message." So, for your Bright Monday celebration, invite members, nonmembers, guests, people off the streets, to a party, in which they will provide the laughter and fun. Invite them to use their varied talents: poetry, jokes, stories, music, painting, you name it. They are urged to use the talents and interests that God has given them. Conrad Hyers, a Presbyterian pastor, captures the essence of this celebration. "If the Gospel really is Good News, when do we get to shout, 'Whoopee!'?" I ask a similar question, "When do we get to shout, 'Tah-dah!'?"
F.M.C. also encourages congregations to continue the Easter celebration on the Sunday after Easter as "Bright Sunday" and to observe April as "Holy Humor Month."

As a member of F.M.C., and an occasional writer for The Joyful Noiseletter, I know that you will be glad you did! And all the people said, "Tah-dah!"
Invite everyone to wear bright clothes to worship on the second Sunday in Easter, known as Bright Sunday, previously known as Low Sunday.
