The Sermon:
Do you like to have a birthday? What is a birthday? It is remembering the day you were born. We like to have cake and ice cream and get presents. *Maybe we'll have a party, play some games, and do fun things.
Did you choose to be born? No. When you became a member of your family, a baby in your mother and father's family, you didn't have a choice. It was decided for you. But, there is a birth we can choose and a family we can choose to be born into. That happens when we choose to make Jesus our Lord and Savior and obey him. We are born into God's family. John 1:12 says, "But to all who received him [that's Jesus], who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God."
God loves us so much that he wants us in his family. "See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God" (1 John 3:1).
God lets us choose to be his children. He doesn't make anyone do that. When we do choose to believe in Jesus as our Lord, we are children of God and part of a great big family. Galatians 3:26 says, "For in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith."
We like to celebrate when we have a birthday. The Bible says when someone chooses to trust in Jesus and be in God's family, there is celebration in heaven (Luke 15:10).
God's family includes all who love Jesus here in our town of ____________, in our state of ____________, in our country of America, and in the whole world. We have brothers and sisters in God's family whom we have never met. We don't know them yet, but someday when Jesus says it's time, we will meet them all.
