Palimpsest is parchment from which one or more writings have been erased to make room for late records. But erasers are not always complete so scholars reconstruct the dim fragments of letters partly erased and partly covered by subsequent texts. Reconstructing these records of the past and learning the stories which they contain is the task of those who write history.

There is a salvation history which is available to us thanks to those who were inspired to write it down as their own witness.
