The Benediction
Children's sermon
Let Them Answer
(When the children come forward, have a "Love" or "I Love You" stamp for each child, a large light bulb, a life jacket and binoculars.)
Good morning! The worship is about over. Are you ready to go home? (LTA) What did you like best about today's worship service? (LTA) Does anyone know what the benediction is? (LTA) It's almost the last thing the pastor says in the service. It is a blessing which God gave to the brother of Moses. What was his name? (LTA) His name was Aaron. Has anyone memorized the blessing yet? (LTA) Would you say it with me:
The Lord bless you and keep you.
The Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you.
The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace.
Has anyone ever said "Bless you?" (LTA) What do you think they mean? (LTA) It means "God, please surround my friend with love and take care of them." I have an "I Love You" stamp here for everyone. (Pass them out.) Could you say "Bless you" to your friends? (LTA) That's what the pastor is doing when he says "May the Lord bless you."
There is more to that prayer, though. "May the Lord bless you and keep you." Does that mean that we want God to lock you up in a jail and keep you? (LTA) No. What do you think it means? (LTA) Yes. I think it means "Keep you safe." I brought a life jacket for someone to put on. (Put it on someone.) What will a life jacket do? (LTA) It will keep you from drowning, won't it? (LTA) So in the prayer the pastor is asking God to surround you with love, take care of you wherever you are and keep you safe from every danger.
Another part of the benediction asks the Lord to make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. Do you like to see your parents' faces when you are doing something in a scary place? (LTA) I know that I sure did. Seeing their faces was like seeing a light in a dark room. So I have a light for someone to hold for us to remind us that God is light and his face gives us light. Seeing Mom or Dad in a crowd always made me feel better because I knew they were there. In this prayer the pastor asks God to always be near to watch over us.
Does anyone know what the last line of the benediction is? (LTA) "The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace." I have some binoculars here. What are these for? (LTA) Yes. You can look at things that are far away and they look close up, don't they? (Let them look.) Does God want to spy on us? (LTA) No. Why would we want God to look upon us? (LTA) To look on us with favor is to watch over us and take care of what we need so things will work out well for us. That will give us peace of mind, make it so we can relax in the Lord.
Would you like to help me give that blessing to the congregation? (LTA) Let's put these objects down and raise both hands. That was the way Aaron was told to send a blessing. I'll say a line and you repeat it after me: "The Lord bless you ..."
