Lectionary Worship Workbook, Series IV, Cycle C
Soul Motion
Object:
A single song is being inflected through all the colorations of the human choir.
The way to become human is to recognize the lineaments of God in all the wonderful modulations of the face [of humankind].
-- Joseph Campbell, The Hero With a Thousand Faces
Call To Worship
Leader: Happy New Year! With new determination we listen for the voice of God and we desire to respond happily.
People: We also listen with new care for the promises of scriptures, which might make our lives prosperous and easier.
Leader: We are here together, then, to pay attention to the ways men and women have honored the holy.
People: And to hear again about the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth.
Leader: Today we celebrate the baptism of Jesus.
People: We long for an experience with God that is life-shaping; we want the Holy Spirit to come upon us; we want to hear divine affirmation -- we want to feel the pleasure of God.
Leader: God has made us and all creatures! God has looked and declared, "It is good." With that knowledge, we join our voices to rejoice and to be thankful.
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Unison or Leader)
God of the past and present -- we've turned the calendar page. With our whole selves mind, body, and soul -- we thank you for your presence with us and among all peoples. Sprinkle us with your grace; renew again our connections with one another and with your Spirit. Speak clearly so we do not mistake your affirmation with the "sweet talk" of our society. Amen.
Call To Confession (Leader)
The past is done; the present is now. Now is the moment to be freed from old baggage and sin; now is the moment to receive fresh direction for your days and nights. Let's pray in unison and then make our personal commitments to God.
Community Confession (Unison)
Living God -- disappointments and betrayals clutter our minds.
Nasty words and bitterness hamper our relationships.
Belligerent attitudes get in the way of your guidance.
We regret all these thoughts and behaviors and we pray for freedom from guilt and shame.
As this new year matures, transform us to live fully aware of your beguiling love. Amen.
Word Of Grace (Leader)
You are an offspring of God. Rejoice and live appropriately -- gently, contentedly, hospitably, and generously. The heavens do open; the Spirit does declare that God is with you. Receive this good news and live as a bold disciple of Jesus the Christ.
Sermon Idea
The rite/ritual of baptism in the new year is a powerful image of new intentions and new awarenesses for each person's current stage of development. A cedar branch dipped into the baptismal font waters and sprinkled over people is a way to immediately get people's attention! From the slow motion of waiting/expecting through the commotion of new birth to the spiral motion or locomotion of loss-of-innocence to coming-of-age, our perceptions of the Holy morph as does our sense of self in the world. Our hands and our thoughts move sometimes randomly. Questions to consider might be:
* What difference does it make that we are in church together baptized?
* How do our behaviors and attitudes change when we say that the Holy Spirit anoints us?
* What happens in our souls/spirits as we receive fresh blessings?
* How do we participate in the "human choir" after we are refreshed?
Contemporary Affirmation (Unison)
Throughout nature we see the imagination of the creating God.
In Jesus the Christ we learn how to be in relationship with the Holy.
With the Holy Spirit, we are empowered to embody divine love and mercy.
In community, we experience belonging and receive the encouragement to live as faithful disciples of Jesus and to struggle for justice and peace for all creatures.
Together, we have an insistent voice, proclaiming that there is a "kingdom of heaven."
Offertory Statement (Leader)
The new page of the calendar reminds us that few things in life are sure.
We sit here in space heated and cooled, painted and carpeted.
Our psyches are coached with music and ministers, with books and supplies.
For sure, our culture demands money in exchange for things that are important to us.
So we pass plates that receive your contributions to maintain this building, to refresh these accoutrements and to reach out to those in need.
Doxology
Now Thank We All Our God, tune: NUN DANKET ALLE GOTT
Now thank we all our God with hearts and hands and voices,
Who wondrous things hath done in whom this world rejoices;
Who from our mothers' arms hath blessed us on our way
With countess gifts of love and still is ours today.
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader)
For the wonders of life together and the challenge to make the world better, we thank you. Amen.
Intercessory Prayers (Leader or Readers)
Dependable God -- our mortality greets us as we prepare for sleep and as we wake; our fragility shows up when disease clobbers us. We long to feel your healing presence; we yearn for reassurance that this life is not all there is. We look for signs of your work among us; we make time to be still and to be aware that you are sustaining Holiness in the clamor of earning our keep in society. Thank you for the rituals that take us through each day.
God of Tomorrow -- time dangles before us and still peace has not come to this universe. The year is young and we pray for peace among adults so the children can grow up to know gentleness, sanity, collaboration, and compromise. We pray for peace between nations whose place in the world market is dependent upon every other nation. Let wisdom come to leaders and followers in dreams and in lucid conversations. Let the wishes of Christmas be realized in our homes and in the world.
God of Stillness and Motion -- we do our dervishes and feel the dizziness of your divinity completing our humanity. When our pace seems to be a dawdle, you greet us in good food, in beautiful pictures, in stimulating conversations, in bright babies, and in our own mirrors. In the quiet and in the fierceness of our days and relationships, you breathe, "It is good," reminding us that we co-create with you the possibilities of Christ walking here in our town and on our street corner. Thank you for the variety in our thoughts and activities, on the land, in the waters, and in the sky. Amen.
Benediction/Charge (Leader)
As you leave the sanctuary, be alert for all the colors of humanity; listen for songs beginning low and swelling to a great "Hooray!" Watch for the modulations of souls -- your own and others, move about wearing some sign of God-within, reaching with unmistakable goodness to those close by. Most of all, may the God of today and tomorrow enliven your days and nights through this new year!
