Call to Worship (based on Psalm 29)
Leader: Give to Yahweh glory and strength; worship Yahweh in holy splendor.
People: The voice of Yahweh is powerful and full of majesty.
Leader: The voice of Yahweh breaks down trees and shakes the wilderness. The voice of Yahweh strips the forest bare.
People: And we all say, "Glory! Give us strength!"
All: May Yahweh bless us all with peace. Amen.
Prayer of Invocation
Gracious and generous God, you have given us so much. You have given us your son Jesus Christ as our redeemer and mediator. On this special day when we remember the baptism of Jesus, help us to remember that he was a man of peace. He peacefully came down to the Jordan River where John was baptizing people into a new way of knowing you. John said, "I can't baptize you!" Jesus replied that this was the way it was to be. You acknowledged who Jesus was that day, and Jesus began his ministry of peacemaking. Help us to feel your presence today as we renew our own baptismal vows; remembering your words, "This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased." Amen.
Scripture Readings
Isaiah 42:1--9: A wonderful depiction of the chosen as a peacemaker, this scripture could be read by women, standing or sitting together as if they were at a stream. Perhaps the flowers on the altar could be cattails and lilies, and the women could gather around the flowers. The women should talk to each other, just as they would if they had gathered for a conversation.
Woman 1: Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen (Lifts hands as if holding up a newborn baby), in whom my soul delights; (Other women gather as if looking at the baby) I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations.
Woman 2: (Clucking at child) This one will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street;
Woman 3: (Touching flowers and candles on altar) A bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; (Eyes back on baby) he will faithfully bring forth justice.
Woman 4: This child will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice in the earth (Spreads hands out in front of her), and the coastlands wait for his teaching.
Woman 1: (Bring hands down and steps forward a step) Thus says Yahweh, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it:
All Women: (Stepping forward to stand together) I am the Lord, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; (Take hands) I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations,
Woman 2: to open the eyes that are blind,
Woman 3: to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon
Woman 4: from the prison those who sit in darkness.
All Women: I am Yahweh, that is my name; my glory I give to no other; nor my praise to idols. (Drop hands)
Woman 1: (Stepping forward slowly down the aisle as she speaks, other women following single file) See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them.
Also read Acts 10:34--43 and Matthew 3:13--17. After the sermon, you might do a service of renewal of baptismal vows. This service can be found in The Book Of Common Worship, PCUSA, or other denominational service books.
Benediction
Leader: God shows no partiality. In every nation all who know God and do what is right are God's people.
People: God sent us the message, "Jesus Christ is Lord of all."
Leader: That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced.
People: Jesus then went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed, for God was with him.
Leader: Go and do the same, filled with the Holy Spirit.
All: Let it be so!
