Good morning, boys and girls. Raise hands, all of you who can't wait to get back to school! I knew there would be some of you who wouldn't be too eager about it! How do you suppose I knew that?
I remember that as a child I never wanted the summer vacation to end. I wanted to be free to play and have fun going on trips or off to my grandparents' house for a visit.
But, school starts again and we are soon involved in all the activities and the learning that goes on there, aren't we?
Why do you suppose it is so important for you to go to school, anyway? (Responses -- Some might be quite helpful and incorporated into your theme and may give a youthful perspective to education.) Education is very important to us so that we can have leaders in future generations. Government, industry, the arts and sciences, commercial business, and even the church rely on the learning that goes on among children who are in school today.
I expect that some of you know what you would like to be when you become adults, don't you? Who would like to share your goal with us? (Responses -- Allow as many as you have time for.) Maybe some of you are too young just now to know, but over the years you will be making decisions about your lives, and the learning that you are doing now will be very important to you one day. The Bible says, "Study to show yourselves approved unto God," and that applies not only to the study of the Bible that you do, but all study that you do that helps to prepare you to be all that God wants you to be.
We should be thankful for our educational system and for all the dedicated teachers who help us to learn about ourselves and our world. (Give out blackboards.)
(Prayer for students, schools, and teachers.)
