pill bugs (aka roly-polies, sow bugs) in a container that allows viewing
Scripture: Ephesians 6:14-17
Stand therefore, and fasten the belt of truth around your waist, and put on the breastplate of righteousness. As shoes for your feet put on whatever will make you ready to proclaim the gospel of peace. With all of these, take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Look what I have today. Pill bugs! Aren't they cute? (If your group is small, this is a good time to spill the pill bugs out on a piece of paper. Draw a circle around them and let them "race" to see who gets out of the circle first.)
Pill bugs live in damp places, like under rocks and logs. They eat dead plants and anything that is rotting. In fact, they are some of God's recyclers. We call them pill bugs because they roll up in little balls if they are in danger. This protects their soft bodies by wrapping the outside shells around them. (encourage a pill bug to demonstrate by poking it with a finger) It makes them look like a pill, so they earned the name "pill bug," get it? But did you know that pill bugs are not really bugs at all? They are crustaceans, like crabs and lobsters. I think that is amazing!
When I was growing up, we used to call these funny little creatures armor bugs because they looked like flat, little knights in shining armor. Whenever I see them, I remember to put on the whole armor of God.
What is the armor of God? Well, the Bible tells us that we have an enemy called the devil. So God gave us special invisible armor to keep us safe. This armor is made of powerful spiritual things like truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and the Word of God. We might not understand it all, but that won't keep it from working! God says we can wear his armor, so I'm wearing it! How do I put on this invisible armor? I just say, "I am putting on the whole armor of God. Just like it says in the Bible."
