FIRST SUNDAY -- THE CANDLE OF HOPE
On this first Sunday of Advent, we come together in hope, yet in the assurance that the one on whom our hope is fixed, Jesus Christ our Savior, is present with us. We light the first candle trusting in the hope of our salvation.
(Light the first candle.)
Read: "O Israel trust in the Lord! For with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with him is great power to redeem. It is he who will redeem Israel from all its iniquities." (Psalm 130:7-8)
SECOND SUNDAY -- THE CANDLE OF PEACE
(Light the candle of Hope.)
The peace that Jesus brings is beyond understanding. It rights the wrongs and calms our fears. Today we light the candle of peace, looking for the coming of Christ to bring everlasting peace to our world.
(Light the second candle.)
Read: "Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name; worship the Lord in holy splendor. The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord sits enthroned as King forever. May the Lord give strength to his people! May the Lord bless his people with peace." (Psalm 29:2, 10-11)
THIRD SUNDAY -- THE CANDLE OF LOVE
(Light the candles of Hope and Peace.)
God's boundless love gave us Jesus Christ as the redeemer of humanity. Today we light the candle of love secure in the knowledge that God loves us and we are saved because of that love.
(Light the third candle.)
Read: "Love the Lord, all you his saints. The Lord preserves the faithful, but abundantly repays the one who acts haughtily. Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the Lord." (Psalm 31:23-24)
FOURTH SUNDAY -- THE CANDLE OF JOY
(Light the candles of Hope, Peace, and Love.)
In God's presence there is fullness of joy to all who trust in God's holy Word. Today we light the candle of Joy. We find joy in the presence of Christ. Our hearts rejoice because our Savior comes to receive us to himself.
(Light the fourth candle.)
Read: "Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you. Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you judge the peoples with equity and guide the nations upon earth. Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you." (Psalm 67:3-5)
CHRISTMAS EVE -- THE CHRIST CANDLE
(Light the four Advent candles.)
Emmanuel, God with us, has been made manifest in our world. The waiting is over, the time has come for celebration. Christ our Savior is born anew among us.
(Light the candle in the center.)
Read: "O come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!" (Psalm 95:1-2)
