We wonder, O God, what we would have believed if we had lived in first century Israel. Would we have been convinced that this child, the first born son of Mary and Joseph, was indeed the promised Messiah? Would we have later believed that he died for us -- for us! -- then rose from the dead, granting us life ever after? Or would we have gone along our usual ways, not bothering ourselves with such questions? Of course we like to think we would have been wise and courageous.
