Poems Based on Lectionary Gospels
Long ago Isaiah said it,
prophesied a messenger
who would come before Messiah
acting as his harbinger.
Last of prophets, first of martyrs,
John fulfilled his given role,
calling men to their repentance
so that God could make them whole.
John prepared all those who’d hear him
as Isaiah had forseen.
He baptized them in the Jordan
to denote that they were clean.
and he warned that the Messiah
soon would make his presence known.
And, fulfilling God’s intention,
