A Children's Bible Study
Object:
a Bible, knitting needles, yarn, and a sweater
We love, because he first loved us.
-- 1 John 4:19
Materials: a Bible, knitting needles, yarn, and a sweater
Did you know I could knit? Strangest thing, one day I saw these needles and some yarn (show them the knitting needles and yarn) and I picked them up and after a little while I had knitted this sweater! (show them the sweater) Do you believe that's what really happened? (let them answer) No. The truth is that I would need someone to teach me how to knit. It could not just happen; it would take many weeks for me to learn, and many more months until I could finish the sweater. I would be able to knit only if someone would first teach me.
How many of you can do something because someone else taught you? (let them answer) Learning isn't always easy, is it? It can takes hours and hours of practice to become really good at something. It's great to have someone teaching us who encourages and helps us while we learn. Our verse for today tells us something we do because God first taught us. I'll read it from the Bible. It's in the New Testament, the book called 1 John, chapter 4, verse 19. We love, because he first loved us. (have them repeat) How does God teach us to love? (let them answer) What are some ways we can love others? (let them answer)
Let's say that verse together. We love because he first loved us -- 1 John 4:19.
God is the best teacher in the whole universe. God gives us love with every breath we take and shows us how to love through the Bible, through Jesus, and through all the things we experience in life.
Prayer
God, thank you for loving us and not giving up on us. Thank you for being there to help us learn to love more each day. Amen.
