The Day Of Pentecost
Worship
Lectionary Worship Workbook, Series IV, Cycle C
Soul Motion
Zoos are no longer in people's good graces.
Religion faces the same problem.
Certain illusions about freedom plague them both.
-- Yann Martel, Life of Pi
(The week before this day, invite people to wear colors of fire to acknowledge the vitality and passion of the Spirit.)
Call To Worship
Leader: It's a good morning! We're awake, breathing, and conversing!
People: We thank God for the breath of life, for mystery and majesty and light!
Leader: We are surrounded with beauty and we thank God, creator of all, for the varied manifestations of divine imagination!
People: In songs, in conversation, and in silence we celebrate the Holy among us!
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader or Unison)
Energy of the Universe -- your emanations amaze us. The ocean and the mountains, the birds and the whales, the moon and the sun, ice and fire, blue eyes and brown -- all around us we see your work. We recognize your liveliness in the seasons that come and go. Thank you for your dependable care of us and of all creation. Thank you for inviting us to be cocreators with you. In this hour, we await your revelation and we explore ways to spell and say, "God." We are eager to be engaged with your Spirit. Amen.
Call To Confession (Leader)
Throughout the global village this morning, people are pronouncing "God" in their own languages, spelling "God" with their own alphabets. Everywhere, people are asking questions about the meaning of their lives. We have our own questions and now there is time to reflect on the Holy Presence with us, noticing the attitudes and ideas that separate us from our sisters and brothers with different alphabets. Pray with me the printed prayer and then have your personal conversation with the Holy One.
Community Confession (Unison)
Designer of Alphabets -- there is so much we do not understand.
Why do some people spell you "Allah" and "Adonai" and "God"?
Why do some say you call for peace and then do violence to their neighbors?
Why do some say you call for justice and then are not fair or honest in their practices?
There is so much we do not understand.
We do know that deep within us is an urge to be connected to what is eternal. So, in this very moment, we want to be free from anything that retards our journey to Holy Mystery and psyche peace.
Transform our priorities and our goals; reshape our relationships and our professions. Amen.
Sermon Idea
Behind the scenes at Babel and Pentecost is the human desire to be close to the Holy, to be intimate with Mystery. The Sacred does not need a tower or a building of any kind to communicate with the human mind and psyche. The Divine does not need a labeled birthday cake or a singular alphabet to describe the Eternal Energy. But humans need words to talk about their experiences with that Energy. Humans need words to describe the "Help in Ages Past." Adjectives and verbs, nouns and adverbs help us explain how the Deity is with humankind and how we relate to Deity. Muslims say there are 99 names for God -- like Wise One, the Good, the Merciful, the Compassionate, the Real Close, the First, the Last. Judaism and Christianity share these attributes of God. In the Pentecost story, one alphabet, one word, one experience of the Holy is expanded to be available in all languages among all people! As Yann Martel suggests in The Life of Pi, the Holy is too mysterious to be fit into any one name, any one word, any one animal; so there are many ways to spell God and we need them all if our psyches are to be free. The task/goal is to help ourselves remember that God loves us; another is to practice loving the way Jesus loved.
Whether it was fifty days after the ascension or fifty days after the crucifixion, Pentecost was a time of celebration, of jubilee. The Pentecost story is the first opportunity the disciples have at marketing their understanding of the Holy Spirit. Peter is a most articulate promoter. Pentecost promotion goes on until Advent. During this time (also called "proper" and "ordinary"), the church is serious about mission and about increasing the numbers of believers.
Contemporary Affirmation (Unison)
We know God, the Creator, by many names;
we believe that God, the Holy One, loves us and all creation.
We know Jesus of Nazareth taught people to love friends and enemies;
we believe Jesus' teachings lead us to satisfaction in living.
We believe the Holy Spirit is moving throughout the global village,
inviting all peoples to live peaceably together;
we experience the Holy Spirit to be motivating us to journey toward
internal contentment and external service for justice.
In community, we are stimulated intellectually to ask questions
about the meaning of life and Mystery.
We are challenged to know ourselves and to relate to God.
We are soothed during the painful parts of life and in good times,
we share our rejoicings! Hurrah! Yippee! Hallelujah!
Offertory Statement (Leader)
With your own language, your own talents, and your own moneys, this is the moment when you can respond with generosity to Holy Generosity so that tangible goodness continues in this place.
Doxology
The Lone, Wild Bird (v. 2, modified), tune: PROSPECT
The ends of earth are in God's hand, The sea's dark deep and far-off land.
And I am yours! I rest in you. Great Spirit, come, and rest in me.
Prayer Of Thanksgiving (Leader)
God of Babel and Pentecost -- we are grateful for the ways you are among us, blessing us with multiple gifts. Thank you for this money and for the talents gathered here. Amen.
Intercessory Prayers (Leader or Readers)
God of Words -- in poetry and prose, in sound waves and visual images, we experience your life-changing activity. For those of us in pain, speak encouragement; for those of us struggling with disease, speak healing; for those of us who are depressed and disillusioned, speak hope. For those of us whose burdens seem unbearable, lift us with options; for those of us whose baggage hampers wholeness, touch us with surprising possibilities. Whatever our need, meet us in our own languages, in our own images, on our own paths.
God of Thoughts -- some of us think literally, some of us think symbolically. Some of us imagine how things might be; some imagine how you think and speak and plan. Some of us ask questions and answer them with stories to explain what is important to us. Some define how you work with humankind. Some of us feel you in silence; some are inspired with thoughts amid clutter. Some of us build spires and some build crosses. However you come to us, thank you. Thank you for your everywhere-present Spirit. Help us not be arrogant or stubborn about our own experiences with freedom and grace.
God of Religions -- we've tried since human beginnings to understand how the cosmos came into being, what holds the earth in place, why the sun is golden and the moon silvery. We've wondered if you have a beard, if you have hair, and if your ears hug your head; we wonder what makes some people kind and some cruel. These questions are not answered in ways that satisfy our curiosity, but we do understand that people of today are in a long line of humans who seek to know you and one another. With bricks and mortar, with prayers and names, with rules and ceremonies, we have tried to make sure you love us and that we please you. Each of us has a nickname for you to express our loyalty and love. Guide us in our questing; open us to the possibilities of your ways throughout this planet.
God of Bread and Grapes -- rain and drought cycle through days and nights on every continent. Insects and diseases ravage crops in every nation. We pray for peace and food for the children and adults in every tribe. Come to politicians, raining on them wisdom and compassion, compelling them to share their wealth with people whose blessings are minimal, whose skills do not support their will to live. Banish corruption and evil intent; stop hatred and ugliness. Let us and this planet experience again real truth, real neighborliness, and real godliness. Let there be no more war; instead, inspire all humankind to wage peace. Amen.
Benediction (Leader)
Life is a surprising journey to God.
Experiment with multiple names for God;
Explore different ways to respond to the Holy Spirit.
Laugh each day and unbuild the overwhelming towers of the world.
Notice possibilities around each corner;
Make dreams and cultivate a glad heart!
Holy Spirit empowers you and me to live real life --
Peace be yours, deep peace. Amen.
