An Old Testament professor who had been a refugee prior to WWII shared this story with his class about the trip he made to America aboard a boat. The boat was very Spartan and each day people were crowded in the hold of the ship to get a bit of fresh air. Each day he noticed a man in the corner of the hold with his face to the wall, shaking his fist with great fervor. After several days he approached the man and asked why each day he went into the corner and shook his fist. The man replied, "Each day I go there to pray." The professor then asked, "But why are you shaking your fist?" The man replied, "Because this is a miserable trip and I'm angry and I'm letting God know about it."
It is very healthy for us to express all our emotions and feelings in prayer, not just the ones we think praise or placate God, but also our fears and angers. The more open we are to God the more easily God can deal with us.
