One of Jesus' classic statements is the word that "continuing in him, being his disciples, we would know the truth and the truth would set us free." Anthony Padovano has pointed out that real freedom means assuming certain obligations. To be "free from" something makes us "free to" assume particular tasks. Padovano says, "If we achieve a freedom from restrictions and do not move toward a freedom to do certain things, we suffer from the burden of freedom and the burden of ourselves."
Perfect freedom is found in the service of God. That is, it is to be a responsible freedom. Freedom in Christ means freedom to obey. Obeying Christ in turn gives us the freedom to be the best that we have it in us to become.
A few years ago, many people were talking about what was called the "New Morality," or "Situation Ethics." It was supposed to be the ultimate in freedom; there were to be no moral absolutes. Everything would be decided within its particular situation or context. But those who took that philosophy seriously realized that it was not a system where "anything goes." Rather, it was a system based on the premise that in any situation one was to do the loving thing. This was freedom -- but it was responsible freedom. Love, rather than law, became the norm. One was free from law, but in that freedom one was called to make decisions in the light of Christ's love. The norm for Christian decision making is love; that is what freedom in Christ is all about.
