Call it what you want but its meaning sings out from that old spiritual, "Lord, I want to be a Christian in my heart." The start is in the heart. That's where the desire begins a fire.
M. L. Carr, a pro basketball player, commented on the college draft a few years ago and said, "They can take a man and measure him, examine him, analyse him, and dissect his stats but they can't look into his heart." That's where the thirst is -- the hunger.
It'd been awhile since I'd been thirsty and hungry for righteousness and that beatitude had not meant much to me. But now it does and as I analyzed the road to that status, I returned to Ben Johnson's words in Pastoral Spirituality, "One of God's saints says that sometimes God seduces us with great joy and a sense of holy presence and then withdraws it to create an even deeper hunger within us." It's good to thirst again.
