Ashes, ashes, all fall down
Children's sermon
Object:
ashes
How many of you know the song that goes "Ring around the rosie
..."? How does it end? I found that there are many ways for the
song to end but the one I want to look at here today is when it
ends "Ashes, ashes, all fall down."
That little poem tells what happens to everything -- it all turns to ashes and all falls down! That can be kind of scary unless we know about One who does not turn to ashes and who does not fall down.
On this day called "Ash Wednesday" we are reminded that everything will turn to dust and ashes. In other words -- nothing lasts forever -- except the love of God. God's love is eternal. Jesus reminds us to focus on that which lasts -- God's love.
Today many people will put ashes on their foreheads. That is a reminder to them to place their trust in God because everything else comes to an end and will not last. So if you see people who have ashes on their foreheads today it is not because they forgot to wash themselves or because they got a bruise on their foreheads. The ashes are there to remind them of God's wonderful, eternal love.
Let's end by playing "Ring around the rosie" (do this with the children and when "all fall down" remind them again that everything does fall down except God).
