"The truth sets us free"
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: Both Gospel texts above speak to the
theme of the Reformation, which is eliminating hypocrisy in the
church and returning the principles of basic Christianity to
God's people. The principles of the Reformation are not difficult
for children to grasp because they are simple Gospel truths that
are clearly stated in God's word. It is not hard for children to
grasp the truth about how we are saved. We can set them free from
guilt and worry if we instill in them an understanding that our
glorious God has done what was necessary for our salvation and
all we need to do is believe that He has done it.
* Ask the children to name the things we need to do in order
to get into Heaven. List the things they name on a board or easel
until you have several things listed. Discuss the list you have
created (most, if not all of the things named will be good
works), and ask them how they can be sure these things are
adequate to give them admission to Heaven. When you have
established that there is no way to do enough good works to
offset our sin, go back through the list and eliminate everything
that is some form of good work on our part. If it is not listed
(and it probably won't be), write in large letters, "Faith" or
"Believing in Jesus." Explain this truth that sets us free.
Sunday school assembly opening:
* Sing a Reformation hymn, such as "A Mighty Fortress."
