Faith Matters and Matters of State
Especially in America, with our constitutional guarantee of freedom of religion on the one hand and provisions for a wall of separation between church and state on the other, preaching on political issues has always been a touchy matter. In light of our distinctive American tradition, how do we deal with those numerous texts from both testaments, from entirely different cultures, that depict powerful prophetic protests against injustice in high places? How can we bring the prophetic function to bear on matters on which political decisions need to be made?
