Even though all of us at times experience life as a "vale of tears," we in the First World realize that we are more privileged than any other people in the entire sweep of history. We know also that most human beings are fated to endure life-long, abject poverty and misery. We sense that feelings of guilt are not the answer -- unless they can lead to redemptive action -- and we admire those who use their talents, their technical training, their political muscle, and their faith to make a dent in human suffering.
