You don't see lepers in America. But our human community has other ways of casting out the undesirable. We leave them to decay, inside their rotting and disintegrating neighborhoods. They show up in the recesses of every city in the land. Like leprosy, the stigma that attaches to them is enough to keep "good folk" safely removed in unpolluted neighborhoods.
Israel was at wit's end to know how to reach out to lepers. So seem we to be with ours. And the fabric of the human family is the poorer for it.Leviticus 13:1-2, 44-46 Rebellion from the living God is much like leprosy. It separates and sets loose an infection that, if left unchecked, destroys all life around it. In our folly we pretend "It's ordinary. Everybody's doing it." How different is that from proclaiming, "Leprosy? A little can't hurt anybody"?
