You don't have to be a farmer to know that you have to plow the ground before you can plant seed. Seed broadcast upon untilled soil never has a chance to germinate. Wind blows it away, the birds eat it, and the hardened crust of the land creates a barrier impossible for tender shoots to penetrate.
Tilling the soil is a violent process. The ground is broken and turned upside down, but only thus is it made ready for its life-nurturing capacity.
No one likes the pain of a broken heart, but broken hearts are the soil made ready for God's life-giving work.
