Would that we had died...
Illustration
"Would that we had died ... in the land of Egypt ... when we sat by the fleshpots ..." Coming to a hard place, the Israelites wished they had died when things were easier. Difficulties had obscured their vision of a promised land. They weren't the last to have vision obscured by difficulty, to be diverted from some high purpose by some temporary interruption.
