Wisdom is something deeper than the genetic ability to memorize all sorts of quotations, calculations and to be able to reproduce it by rote. Too often scholars, brilliant in their own field lack the true wisdom that is the basis for everyday living. Indeed, all of us would be able to cope with life, if we are able to approach it with this gift of wisdom which was so dear to the writer of Proverbs.
The Scots have another word for it. 'Gumption,' an intuitive way of understanding the problems of life. Principal MacGregor of Glasgow's Trinity College, used to say, "Three gifts were required to be a competent preacher: Greek, grace, and gumption. If a man lacks Greek, he may sit and study his books. If the person lacks grace, he goes down on his knees and it is poured out to him freely from heaven. But if a person lacks gumption, there is nothing on earth or in heaven that can help him."
