In William Robertson Nicoll's volume of expositions we read this modern adaptation of the relevance of this pericope (2 Kings 2:1-12a) to our common life today: "The transmission of spiritual heritage is a concern of our individual lives: the relationship of father to son, mother to daughter, young to the old, those who are passing away to those who will take their place. A relationship of some kind there must be; and it concerns us all. The next generation will consist of the children of today; and these will owe their character to their parents' example and precepts."
