Why was John in the wilderness until "the day of his manifestation to Israel"? Perhaps the lyrics from the refrain of Dewey Bunnell's 1971 hit, "A Horse With No Name," may give us a clue. "I've been through the desert on a horse with no name/ It felt good to be out of the rain/ In the desert you can remember your name/ For there ain't no one for to give you no pain." John needed to find his name, his identity, his center without the distractions of human culture luring him this way and that.
