"Why should I?"
"Because I said so!"
"That isn't any reason!"
"Do it anyway."
Every teenager in America has had at least one exchange like that with at least one parent. It isn't really the case that kids ought to do what they're told for no reason. It isn't true that "because I said so" is it's own self--justifying reason. In fact, parents do have reasons ... usually very good reasons. The fact is, however, sometimes parents simply don't have time, energy, or opportunity to lay out all reasons for wanting what they have a right to ask their teens to do.
And, in a few rare cases, there is no immediate prospect of making the reason believable to the "askee."
Poor Abraham. He was in the same spot as a typical traumatized teen. His only son was on the block. The future rode with Isaac. And Indian--giver God was asking Isaac back.
"Why should I?"
