Why do Christians break bread together? Because Jesus first broke bread in the Upper Room? But Jesus was not the first to break bread and share it. Mark describes the careful preparations which always characterized the Passover meal, the Seder, where unleavened bread was always broken and shared -- bread of freedom, bread of Exodus, unleavened because people making a dash for freedom from slavery had no time to let their bread rise. Breaking bread was, in the time of Jesus as it remains today, a powerful symbol for the Jewish people. So, why did Christains break bread?
