Who is Lazarus today? His problem was not that he needed spiritual food.
He was hungry. It is estimated that twenty-four percent of the world's population on any given day goes to bed hungry.
He was homeless. Conservative estimates are that there are over 250,000 homeless in the United States today. There are millions of refugees across the world.
He was sick with sores. Less than fifteen percent of the population in developing countries live within walking distance of a health facility.
He was poor. In many states, single persons and couples who have no children at home cannot get any welfare benefits from age eighteen to sixty-one, even if they are destitute.
"If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead." (Statistics provided by the Lutheran Human Relations Association of America's Covenant packet on Hunger and Homelessness in the United States.)
