While laws may differ depending on cultural or geographic contexts, they are usually intended to protect or benefit people as they live and work in specific situations. Laws are not designed to be obstacles, although sometimes that may appear to be the case.
When we drive a car and come to a stop sign or red traffic light, the rules of the road teach us we must obey the signals and stop. Other rules determine how we proceed from the stop sign, or whether we may turn right or left on a red light, after stopping first. Such traffic laws are designed to prevent accidents and eliminate confusion on our streets and highways.
There are times, however, when the rules of the road do not take first priority. How many of us would want an ambulance crew to stop at every red light or obey all posted speed limits if we or our loved ones were being transported for emergency care?
