When a young couple prepare to get married there are certain requirements to be met.
They must seek out the registrar -- for marriage is a legal commitment.
They must decide whether to be married in a church or in a registry office. For they must together make a commitment in the presence of a congregation or witnesses, to fulfill the obligations of the marriage contract.
Jesus adds a third dimension. Let us call it the mystical or the sacramental. This is a union in which two bodies become as one; two personalities so blend with one another in all sorts of conditions for ("for better or for worse") that in the end they discover they have so grown together that they seem as one.
Coleridge the poet wrote that when his wife died it was as if he had lost his right arm.
