When our Bible study class discussed Philemon, there was a lot of sympathy for the man. As a member of society, there were expectations placed on him. There were unspoken rules he had to abide by, rules which have always existed in society and which determine a person's place in it. If Philemon acts as Paul suggests, he faces the ridicule of his friends and the people with whom he works or does business. It would be a major risk.
