When Jesus stood up in...

When Jesus stood up in his hometown synagogue and told the folks he had come "to announce good news to the poor and set at liberty the oppressed" (Luke 4:18 paraphrased), he wasn't kidding. The God of the Hebrew people is the God of the lowly, the poor and the oppressed. We have only to look at God's response to the cry of the captive Israelite children of Egypt to know that God has a deep concern for the poor and downtrodden. God's response involved liberation, sustenance for human needs, and the ongoing establishment of justice and righteousness for the nation of Israel.
