When the early Christians argued over the practice of circumcision and its application to the Christian faith, they were merely setting an example which has been carried down through the ages. The Christian faith has constantly suffered through arguments about baptism, communion, creeds, etc. John Wesley once said, "Opinion is not religion, not even a right opinion." And Henry Pitt Van Dusen could have substituted the word "Christianity" for "religion" in the following statement.
