When David was made king...

When David was made king of Judah, the nation of Israel became divided. Conflict between supporters of David and supporters of Saul escalated. Eventually the violent deaths of Abner and Saul’s son Ish-bosheth, two leaders who could have created a separate kingdom, caused all of Israel to realize that David was indeed the Lord’s choice to rule all the people. This allowed David to consolidate his power. Sometimes, in both church and society, selfish concerns grasp our attention, and only a momentous or disastrous event can bring us to our senses. Then we may realize that a greater cause is more important than one that pleases only us. We all have our personal preference as to how things should be, but others may feel quite differently. I hope we can remember what is truly important when we allow ourselves to look at the big picture.
