When Abraham Lincoln was a young man he went with a relative to New Orleans. There he saw a young woman and her son being auctioned as slaves. They were cruelly split up and sent to different owners. As the young woman was dragged away screaming for her child Lincoln drew himself up in a rage and said of slavery, "If I ever get a chance to hit this thing I'm gonna hit it hard."
His chance did come and he allowed his anger to make a difference.
