What was Jesus really like...

What was Jesus really like? That question has been asked and answered over and over again throughout the history of Christianity. Different pictures of Jesus have emerged from time to time. In the last century one school of Christian students maintained it was impossible to know the historical Jesus. Albert Schweitzer answered that with the Quest for the Historical Jesus. The question has been raised again more recently by Rudolph Bultmann as to how much actual history we can know about Jesus. Bultmann's students have suggested the pursuit for the historical Jesus should begin again. Well, in reality we all work with private impressions. The Jesus people have given us one impression. Years ago, Bruce Barton gave us the image of the athletic, outdoorsey, virile, rugged Christ. Scholem Asch gave us the sickly Christ. The theatrical Superstar portrays Christ not as superstar, but as anxious introspective Christ. Godspell gives us a picture of a more confident Christ. However, the prophet would give us a clear picture of the mission of the Christ in the Servant Poem which the evangelists see fulfilled in the Baptism of our Lord.
