What is the old adage...

What is the old adage from World War I? "How're we gonna keep 'em down on the farm after they've seen Paree?"
The doughboys were eyewitnesses of the majesty of European city life; they had seen the world. They no longer could be convinced that their small rural town was the center of the world.
Of course, they also had been eyewitnesses to the horror and destruction of war and the permanence of death. It may not have been as romantic an experience as the adage suggests.
