What a lackluster experience this was for the great missionary of the early church. In finishing his first great journey of missionary witness, he finds that he really does need to have the disciples' help as he goes into all the world. Paul's new vigor fades as he finds his arguments lacking authority. With all the good news that Paul was giving, the harvest was diminished in importance because of church government.
To those pastors who talk about "independent" we can easily add the term "non-authority." The church becomes God's check and balance system. With its many human hindrances and failures, it is still the better system. One man to all the world is not sufficient to meet the world's needs. Only one Christ could do that. We are called to give witness of the Christ --not be him or one like him.
