What does it mean to...

What does it mean to "fear God?" I am thankful that the times in my life I have been most afraid have been in retrospect. These were the times I went naively into a situation, only to discover later that there had been great reason to be afraid of what could have happened, which thankfully did not. I wonder if the fear of God does not at times contain this same measure of thankfulness?
This fear is certainly not the debilitating anxiety produced by serious illness, nor the terror of being trapped by the power of evil. But, in a world where there is so much to be afraid of, the fear of God has within it an element of thankful anxiety, which is always aware that in this tenuous existence, our salvation from all the terrors which might have been rests in God alone.
