West of Phoenix, Arizona, at a site in the desert near Palo Verde, a large nuclear generating station is being built. The construction of this plant is of considerable interest for several reasons. First, when it is fully operative, it will be the largest nuclear generating station in the U.S.A. Second, it is the only nuclear generating station not to be built near an abundant supply of natural water, such as a river or lake or ocean. The plan is to purchase the effluent waste water from a number of communities in central Arizona to provide the necessary cooling.
