Well, then, why are so...

"Well, then, why are so many people hungry?" A common question from people who question God's existence or God's loving kindness. Unfortunately, many Americans who ask this question do not recognize two realities. First, they are unaware that God has given us enough to feed everyone now living on the earth. This earth is able to provide adequate nutrition for the rich and for the poor, and if we use the earth's precious resources wisely, there will be plenty of food for all. Second, these people are not aware that middle-class Americans are among the richest five percent of people on the earth. As some of the richest people on earth and as Christ's disciples, the responsibility is on our shoulders to feed the hungry.
Of course, feeding the hungry will cause our lives to look different. Instead of sending the multitudes away to find food for themselves, instead of averting our eyes from our hungry neighbors on this planet, we may need to trust Jesus to teach us how to share what we have that all may eat.
