We think that because we have cars and telephones that we are so advanced. But the story in Genesis, which recounts Cain killing Abel, reminds us that in terms of being civilized, we have not advanced at all. We still have not learned how to live in peace.
The communion table of our Lord is not advanced technology. It has nothing about it that excites the senses like video games do. It is not made of expensive metals like the space shuttle is, and it won't elude radar like the Stealth Bomber, but it can do something that all of our technology cannot do. It can teach us how to live in peace.
The table of our Lord teaches us that we are community where the many become one. Each person is different and unique, yet each person is accepted as an essential part of the whole. At the Lord's table we are taught to set aside our differences in order to embrace each other with God's love and live in peace.
