We think of Americans as people who are driven to succeed. We work overtime and we hustle to earn promotions and raises. And that kind of attitude has now been taken on by many Japanese. Perhaps even more so than Americans, the Japanese have a drive to excel and to always be reaching for that next level. But eventually they also find that there are limits. But not all do so well in dealing with those limits.
One of the best-selling books in Japan in 1993 was The Complete Manual of Suicide. And as the title suggests, the book contains detailed instructions about various ways to kill yourself. By the middle of 1993 the book had already sold more than 100,000 copies.
Death is the great limit that faces humankind. But Paul proclaims that that limit has been overcome through Jesus.
