We are watching television, when suddenly a voice breaks in and says, "We interrupt this program to bring you a special news bulletin." Immediately we give our full attention to the screen, because we know that whatever is about to be shown and said will be of extraordinary significance. The people who monitor the daily events are giving us the signals that say, "Stop and listen, because this is a very important event."
God also gives us signals that say, "Stop and listen, because this is a very important event." At the baptism of Jesus there are all kinds of signals. There is water; there is the Holy Spirit; there is the spoken Word of God. When was the last time those three elements came together in one event? At the creation of the world. God is saying to us that the baptism of Christ is as significant an event as the creation of the world. -- Welborn
