We are so prone as human beings to place our faith in things other than God. Few examples loom so apparent as that of RMS Titanic. The Titanic took to sea from Southampton, England in 1912 as the epitome of luxury and safety with 2,227 passengers and crew. Ostensibly the vessel was unsinkable by virtue of its size and a series of watertight doors separating sections of the ship. Displacing 46,328 tons, she was 883 feet long, 92 feet wide and 104 feet high. The vessel was equipped with such amenities as electric elevators, a swimming pool, a squash court and a gymnasium.
On April 12, 1912 following a collision with an iceberg, a design flaw was revealed in the ship's watertight integrity that ensured its doom. It took only two hours and 40 minutes for her to sink, leaving only 705 survivors afloat.
